The Prophet (peace be upon him) refusing to eat charity
Hadith 278
أَخْبَرَنَا عَفَّانُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ، نا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ، يَقُولُ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا أُتِيَ بِطَعَامٍ مِنْ غَيْرِ أَهْلِهِ سَأَلَ عَنْهُ، فَإِنْ قِيلَ: هَدِيَّةٌ، أَكَلَ، وَإِنْ قِيلَ: صَدَقَةٌ، قَالَ: كُلُوا وَلَمْ يَأْكُلْ.
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When food from someone’s house was presented to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he would ask about it. If it was said that it was a gift, he would eat from it, and if it was said that it was charity, then he (peace and blessings be upon him) would say: “Eat,” and he would not eat from it.
