Statement about women's pledge and prohibition of wailing
Hadith 265
أَخْبَرَنَا النَّضْرُ بْنُ شُمَيْلٍ، نا هِشَامٌ، عَنْ حَفْصَةَ، عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ قَالَتْ: " فِيمَا أُخِذَ عَلَيْنَا فِي الْبَيْعَةِ أَنْ لَا نَنُوحَ فَمَا وَفَتْ مِنَّا امْرَأَةٌ غَيْرَ خَمْسٍ، مِنْهُنَّ: أُمِّ سُلَيْمٍ، وَامْرَأَةِ مُعَاذِ بْنِ أَبِي سَبْرَةَ أَوِ امْرَأَةِ مُعَاذِ , وَابْنَةِ أَبِي سَبْرَةَ، وَامْرَأَةٍ أُخْرَى، وَكَانَتْ لَا تَعُدُّ نَفْسَهَا لِأَنَّهَا لَمَّا كَانَ يَوْمُ الْحَرَّةِ لَمْ تَزَلِ النِّسَاءُ بِهَا حَتَّى قَامَتْ، فَكَانَتْ لَا تَعُدُّ نَفْسَهَا لِذَلِكَ ".
Lady Umm ‘Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Among the things we were pledged upon was that we would not wail (over the dead). Only five women among us fulfilled this: Umm Sulaym, the wife of Mu‘adh bin Abi Sabrah (may Allah be pleased with him), or the wife of Mu‘adh (may Allah be pleased with him), the daughter of Abu Sabrah, and another woman. And she was not prepared for it until the day of Harrah, when the women participated in it until she stood up; they would not prepare themselves for it.
Hadith 266
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ، نا عَاصِمٌ، نا حَفْصَةُ بِنْتُ سِيرِينَ، عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ قَالَتْ: لَمَّا نَزَلَتْ: ﴿إِذَا جَاءَكَ الْمُؤْمِنَاتُ يُبَايِعْنَكَ عَلَى أَنْ لَا يُشْرِكْنَ بِاللَّهِ شَيْئًا وَلَا يَسْرِقْنَ وَلَا يَزْنِينَ﴾ [الممتحنة: 12] إِلَى قَوْلِهِ: ﴿وَلَا يَعْصِينَكَ فِي مَعْرُوفٍ﴾ [الممتحنة: 12] قَالَتْ: مِنْهَا النِّيَاحَةُ، قَالَتْ: فَقُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، إِلَّا بَنِي فُلَانٍ فَإِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا أَسْعَدُونِي فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ فَلَا بُدَّ مِنْ إِسْعَادِهِمْ فَقَالَ: ((إِلَّا بَنِي فُلَانٍ)).
Lady Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: When this verse was revealed: "When believing women come to you to pledge that they will not associate anything with Allah, will not steal, will not commit adultery... and will not disobey you in what is right," she (Umm Atiyyah) said: Lamentation (wailing) was also included in this. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Except for the women of such-and-such tribe, for they helped me in the days of ignorance, so it is necessary for me to help them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Except for the women of such-and-such tribe."
Hadith 267
أَخْبَرَنَا أَسْبَاطٌ، نا هِشَامٌ، عَنْ حَفْصَةَ، عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ قَالَتْ: ((أَخَذَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي الْبَيْعَةِ أَنْ لَا تَنُحْنَ فَمَا وَفَتْ مِنَّا غَيْرَ خَمْسٍ مِنْهُنَّ أُمُّ سُلَيْمٍ)).
Lady Umm ‘Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took a pledge from us, and in it was that we would not wail (over the dead). Only five of us fulfilled it, and Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) was among them.
