Statement about giving ghusl to the deceased
Hadith 260
أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ الثَّقَفِيُّ، نا أَيُّوبُ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ، عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ قَالَتْ: دَخَلَ عَلَيْنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَنَحْنُ نُغَسِّلُ ابْنَتَهُ، فَقَالَ: ((اغْسِلْنَهَا ثَلَاثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ إِنْ رَأَيْتُنَّ ذَلِكَ، وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي الْآخِرَةِ كَافُورًا أَوْ شَيْئًا مِنْ كَافُورٍ فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ فَآذِنَّنِي)) ، فَلَمَّا فَرَغْنَا آذَنَّاهُ، فَأَلْقَى إِلَيْنَا حَقْوَهُ، فَقَالَ: ((أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ)) .
Lady Umm ‘Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us while we were washing his daughter, so he said: “Wash her three times, or five times, or more than that if you feel it is necessary, and in the last washing add camphor or a little camphor to the water. And when you have finished, inform me.” So when we finished, we informed him, and he threw his waist-wrapper towards us and said: “Wrap her body with it.”
Hadith 261
أَخْبَرَنَا ا أَيُّوبُ: وَحَدَّثَتْنِي حَفْصَةُ بِنْتُ سِيرِينَ بِهَذَا الْحَدِيثِ وَقَالَ فِي الْحَدِيثِ إِنَّهُ قَالَ: ((ابْدَؤُوا بِمَيَامِنِهَا وَبِمَوَاضِعِ الْوُضُوءِ مِنْهَا)) ، وَإِنَّ أُمَّ عَطِيَّةَ قَالَتْ: فَجَعَلْتُ ثَلَاثَةَ قُرُونٍ، يَعْنِي: شَعْرَهَا.
Sayyida Hafsa bint Sirin (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Begin from her right side and from the parts of ablution (when giving the ritual bath)." And Sayyida Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: "I made her hair into three braids."
Hadith 262
أَخْبَرَنَا النَّضْرُ، نا هِشَامُ بْنُ حَسَّانَ، عَنْ حَفْصَةَ، عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ قَالَتْ: ((ضَفَرْنَا شَعَرَ بِنْتِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ثَلَاثَةَ قُرُونٍ ثُمَّ جَمَعْنَاهَا جَمِيعَهَا فَأَلْقَيْنَاهَا خَلْفَهَا)).
Lady Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: We made three braids of the hair of the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), then we gathered all of them together and placed them behind her.
Hadith 263
أَخْبَرَنَا عِيسَى بْنُ يُونُسَ، نا هِشَامُ بْنُ حَسَّانَ، عَنْ حَفْصَةَ، عَنْ أُمِّ عَطِيَّةَ قَالَتْ: تُوُفِّيَ إِحْدَى بَنَاتِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ لَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((اغْسِلُوهَا بِمَاءٍ وَسِدْرٍ، وَاغْسِلُوهَا وِتْرًا ثَلَاثًا أَوْ خَمْسًا أَوْ أَكْثَرَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ إِنَّ رَأَيْتُنَّ، وَاجْعَلْنَ فِي الْآخِرَةِ كَافُورًا أَوْ شَيْئًا مِنْ كَافُورٍ، فَإِذَا فَرَغْتُنَّ فَآذِنَّنِي)) ، فَلَمَّا فَرَغْنَا آذَنَّاهُ، فَأَلْقَى إِلَيْنَا حَقْوَهُ وَقَالَ: ((أَشْعِرْنَهَا إِيَّاهُ)).
Lady Umm ‘Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: One of the daughters of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) told us: “Wash her with water and lotus leaves an odd number of times, three times or five times, or more if you feel it necessary, and in the last washing add camphor or a little camphor to the water. When you have finished, inform me.” When we finished, we informed him, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) threw his waist-wrapper towards us and said: “Wrap her body with it.”
Hadith 264
أَخْبَرَنَا النَّضْرُ بْنُ شُمَيْلٍ، نا هِشَامٌ بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ مِثْلَهُ، وَقَالَ: الْحَقْوُ الَّذِي يُجْعَلُ فَوْقَ الثِّيَابِ، وَقَالَ: الْإِزَارُ تَحْتُ الثِّيَابِ.
Hisham narrated similarly with the same chain of transmission.
