Mentioning the good deeds of the deceased
Hadith 254
أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بِشْرٍ الْعَبْدِيُّ، نا مِسْعَرٌ، حَدَّثَنِي إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ عَامِرِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ، عَنْ عَامِرِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: تُوُفِّيَ رَجُلٌ فَأُثْنِيَ عَلَيْهِ خَيْرًا، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((وَجَبَتْ)) ، ثُمَّ تُوُفِّيَ آخَرُ فَأُثْنِيَ عَلَيْهِ شَرًّا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((وَجَبَتْ)) ، فَعَجِبَ بَعْضُ الْقَوْمِ مِنْهُ وَقَالَ: مَا وَجَبَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((أَنْتُمْ شُهَدَاءُ بَعْضِكُمْ عَلَى بَعْضٍ)) .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: A man passed away and his good qualities were mentioned, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It has become obligatory." Then another man passed away and his bad qualities were mentioned, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It has become obligatory." Some people were surprised at this and asked: O Messenger of Allah! What has become obligatory? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are witnesses over one another."
Hadith 255
أَخْبَرَنَا بَقِيَّةُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ، حَدَّثَنِي الضَّحَّاكُ بْنُ حُمْرَةَ، عَنْ صَالِحٍ الْأُمْلُوكِيِّ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: " مَا مِنْ رَجُلٍ يَمُوتُ فَيَشْهَدُ لَهُ رَجُلَانِ مِنْ خِيرَتِهِ الْأَقْرَبِينَ، فَيَقُولَانِ: اللَّهُمَّ لَا نَعْلَمُ إِلَّا خَيْرًا إِلَّا قَالَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ لِملَائِكَتِهِ: أُشْهِدُكُمْ أَنِّي قَدْ غَفَرْتُ لِعَبْدِي بِشَهَادَتِهِمَا وَتَجَاوزْتُ لَهُ عَمَّا لَا يَعْلَمَانِ ".
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: "Whoever passes away and his two close neighbors testify regarding him, saying: O Allah! We know only good about him, then Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, says to the angels: I make you witnesses that I have forgiven My servant because of the testimony of these two men, and I have pardoned him for the things about which they do not know."
