Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits: In another hadith, it is narrated from Sayyidah Aisha radi Allahu anha that I heard the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam say: ((Lā ṣalāta bi-ḥaḍrat al-ṭaʿām wa-lā huwa yudāfiʿuhu al-akhbathān)) (Muslim, Kitab al-Masajid, no. 560; Sunan Abi Dawud, no. 89).... "There is no prayer in the presence of food, nor while one is resisting the two impurities (i.e., needing to relieve oneself)."
The Shari‘ah has placed this prohibition because, in their presence, humility and submissiveness (khushu‘ and khudu‘) do not remain. Whereas Allah the Exalted has described this quality of the believers’ prayer: ﴿al-ladhīna hum fī ṣalātihim khāshiʿūn﴾ ().... "Those who are humble in their prayers."
If one prays at a time when he needs to urinate or defecate, his heart will not be towards the prayer, but rather towards his need.
In Sahih Bukhari, it is narrated that Sayyiduna Abu Darda’ radi Allahu anhu said: One of the signs of a man’s intelligence is that he fulfills his need so that he can focus on his prayer and his heart is free.
If someone prays in a state where he needs to urinate or defecate, will his prayer be valid or not? The majority of scholars (jumhur ulama) say that the prayer will be valid, but it will not be complete. Therefore, it is recommended (mustahabb) to repeat it, whereas the Zahiri scholars say: the prayer is not valid. Shaykh Abdullah Basam rahimahullah has given preference to the view of the majority.
