Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits: It is established from an authentic narration that wiping (masah) over leather socks (khuffayn) is permissible, as Hazrat Ja'far bin Amr narrates from his father (Sayyiduna Amr bin Harith Makhzumi radi Allahu anhu), who said: I saw the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) wiping over leather socks and a turban. (Bukhari, Kitab al-Wudu, No: 205)
Wiping over leather socks is a concession (rukhsah) from Allah, the Possessor of Majesty, for the Muslims. It should be adopted, because the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: "Allah Almighty loves that His concessions be accepted just as He loves that His commands be fulfilled." (Ibn Khuzaymah: 3/259)
Hazrat Abdullah bin Mubarak rahimahullah has said that there is no difference of opinion among the Companions (radi Allahu anhum) regarding the permissibility of wiping over leather socks. (Tawdih al-Ahkam: 1/257)
A condition for wiping (masah) is that the leather socks must have been worn in a state of ablution (wudu). If the socks were worn in a state of ritual impurity (hadath), then wiping over them is not permissible. (See Sharh Muslim by al-Nawawi: 2/173)
