Hadith 940

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) informed us while he was among a group of his noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), and he said: "When Allah created the heavens and the earth, He created the «صور» and gave it to Israfil (peace be upon him). So he has placed it upon his mouth and is lowering his gaze towards the Throne, waiting to see when he will be commanded (so that he may blow into the «صور»).” Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I asked, O Messenger of Allah! What is the «صور»? He (peace be upon him) said: “It is the horn.” I asked: What is its nature? He (peace be upon him) said: “It is a great thing. By the One in Whose hand is my soul! The circumference of its mouth is as vast as the width of the heavens and the earth. Allah will command Israfil to blow into it three times: the first blowing is «نفخة فزع» (of terror), the second is «نفخة صعق» (the swooning blow), and the third blowing will be for standing before the Lord of the worlds. Allah will command Israfil, and He will say: Blow the «نفخة فزع», so all who are in the heavens and the earth will be terrified except whom Allah wills to exempt. Then He will command him, and he will continue to blow it without any pause or delay. Regarding this, Allah the Exalted says: ‘They await but one blast, which will have no pause.’ Then Allah will set the mountains in motion, and they will move like clouds, then they will become dust, then the earth will tremble violently with its inhabitants, and Allah the Exalted has described this state: ‘On that Day, the quaking will quake, and after it will come another quake. On that Day, hearts will be trembling.’ Then the earth will be like a ship in a stormy sea, waves will strike it and it will overturn with its riders, or like a lamp hanging from the Throne, the winds will rock it. People will fall on their backs, nursing mothers will lose their senses, pregnant women will miscarry, children will become old, devils will flee until they reach the edges, then the angels will meet them and strike their faces, and they will turn back. People will flee, calling out to one another. Regarding this, Allah the Exalted says: ‘The Day of Calling (Resurrection), the Day you will turn your backs fleeing, there will be no protector for you from Allah, and whomever Allah leads astray, there is no guide for him.’ While they are in this state, the earth will split open from one end to the other, and they will witness a great event, causing them to be seized by distress and terror, the extent of which Allah knows. Then the sky will become like dregs, and it will split from one end to the other. Then the sun and moon will lose their light, and the stars will fall, and the sky will be removed from them.” The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “The dead will know nothing of any of this.” Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I asked, O Messenger of Allah! In Allah’s statement regarding the exception: ‘So all who are in the heavens and the earth will be terrified except whom Allah wills.’ Who will be granted this exception? He (peace be upon him) said: “They are the martyrs; they are alive with their Lord. This terror will reach the living, so Allah will protect them from the terror of that Day, and it is Allah’s punishment which He will send upon the worst of His creation. Regarding this, Allah the Exalted says: ‘O people! Fear your Lord, for the earthquake of the Hour is a tremendous thing. On the Day you see it, every nursing mother will forget her nursling, and every pregnant woman will miscarry, and you will see people as if drunk, though they are not drunk, but Allah’s punishment is severe.’” He said: “They will remain in this trial as long as Allah wills, but this period will be long. Then Allah will command Israfil (peace be upon him) regarding the «نفخة صعق» (the swooning blow), so all who are in the heavens and the earth will swoon except whom Allah wills, and they will become lifeless. The Angel of Death will come before the Compeller (Allah the Exalted) and say: O Lord! All who are in the heavens and the earth have died except those whom You willed. Allah will say to him, though He knows best: Who remains? He will say: O Lord! You are the Ever-Living who never dies, the bearers of Your Throne, Jibril and Mika’il, and I remain. Allah will say: Cause Jibril and Mika’il to die. Then the Throne will speak and say: O Lord! Will You also cause Jibril and Mika’il to die? Allah will say: Be silent! Whoever is under My Throne, I have decreed death for him. So they will die, and the Angel of Death will come before the Compeller and say: O Lord! Jibril and Mika’il have died. Allah will say to him, though He knows best: Who remains? He will say: You are the Ever-Living who never dies, the bearers of Your Throne, and I remain. Allah will say: Cause the bearers of My Throne to die. So they will die. Allah will say to him, though He knows best: Who remains? He will say: You are the Ever-Living who never dies, and I remain. Allah will say: You are one of My creation; I created you for what you have seen. So die. Then he will die. When only Allah, the One, the Subduer, the Eternal, remains—He who has no offspring—He will remain as He was at the beginning and at the end. He will say: Now there is «خلود» (eternity); there is no death for the people of Paradise nor for the people of Hell. Then Allah the Exalted will say: ‘To whom belongs the dominion today? To whom belongs the dominion?’ No one will answer Him. Then He will say to Himself: ‘To Allah, the One, the Subduer.’ Then Allah will roll up the heavens and the earth like a scroll for the Book, then Allah will replace the heavens and the earth with another earth, then He will expand them, then seize them, then say: I am the Compeller. Then He will replace the heavens and the earth with another earth, then expand them, then seize them, and say three times: I am the Compeller. Whoever claimed a partner with Me, let him come! Listen, whoever claimed a partner with Me, let him come! No one will come. Then He will spread it out like the tanned leather of ‘Ukaz, and there will be no crookedness or hill (no unevenness) in it. Then Allah will rebuke the creation, and in this transformation, they will be in the state of their previous places; whoever was in its belly will be in its belly, and whoever was on its back will be on its back. Then Allah will send down water upon them from beneath the Throne, and it will rain upon them for forty days, and they will sprout like truffles and vegetables, until when their bodies are complete as they were, Allah the Exalted will say: Let the bearers of the Throne come to life, so they will come to life. Then He will say: Let Jibril and Mika’il come to life, so they will come to life. Then Allah will command Israfil, saying: Blow the «نفخة بعث» (the Trumpet for resurrection), and he will blow the «نفخة بعث», and souls will come out like swarming bees, filling the space between the earth and the sky. The Compeller will say: By My might and majesty! Every soul must return to its body. So the souls will enter the bodies in the earth, then flow into the nostrils as poison flows into the body of one stung by a poisonous creature. Then the earth will split open over them. And the earth will split open over me first, then you will come out quickly, rushing to your Lord, and at that time you will all be thirty years old, and the tongue will be «سريانية». You will come humbly, with heads raised, rushing to the caller. The disbelievers will say: This is a hard day. This is the Day of Coming Forth (from the graves). They will be gathered in one place, and the duration of their stay will be seventy years, and they will be naked and barefoot, uncircumcised. Neither will you be looked at nor will judgment be passed among you. The creation will be weeping until the tears run out, and then they will weep blood. They will be drenched in sweat until some of them have sweat reaching their chins, and it will be bridled upon them. Then they will cry out: Who will intercede for us with our Lord so that He may judge between us? They will say: Who is more deserving of this than your father Adam (peace be upon him)? Allah created him with His own hand, breathed into him of His spirit, and spoke to him directly. They will come to Adam (peace be upon him) and request him, but he will refuse.” The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Until they come to me. When they come to me, I will walk to the «حوض» and prostrate before the Throne. Then my Lord will send an angel to me, who will take me by the arm and raise me up.” Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I asked, O Messenger of Allah! What is meant by «الفحص»? He (peace be upon him) said: “In front of the Throne.” He (peace be upon him) said: “Allah will say: O Muhammad (peace be upon you)! What is your concern? Though He knows best, I will say: O Lord! You promised me intercession, so accept my intercession regarding Your creation and judge between them.” He said: “Allah will say: I will come to you and judge between you.” The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Then I will return and stand with the people. While we are standing, suddenly we will hear a severe sound from the sky that will frighten us. The inhabitants of the lowest heaven, twice the number of jinn and mankind present, will descend. When they approach the earth, the earth will be illuminated by their light, and they will form rows. We will say to them: Is our Lord among you? They will say: No, but He is coming. Then the angels of the third heaven, in a number twice that of the jinn and mankind present, will descend. When they approach the earth, the earth will be illuminated by their light, and they will form rows. We will say to them: Is our Lord among you? They will say: No, but He is coming. Then from each heaven, with this increase, all the angels of the heavens will descend until the Compeller descends in the shade of clouds and angels, and eight angels will carry His Throne. On that Day, they will be four, their feet at the boundaries of the lowest earth, the heavens and the earths at the place where they tie their waistcloths, and the Throne upon their shoulders. There will be a noise from their glorification, and their words of glorification will be: «سبحانك ذي الملك ذي الملكوت، سبحان رب العرش ذي الجبروت، سبحان رب الملائكة والروح، قدوس، سبحان ربنا الأعلى، سبحان رب الملكوت والجبروت والكبرياء، والسلطان والعظمة، سبحانه أبد الآبد، سبحان الحي الذي لا يموت، سبحان الذي يميت الخلائق ولا يموت». Then Allah will place His Throne wherever He wills on the earth. He will say: By My might and majesty! Today, no one will remain with Me by oppression. Then He will call out with a voice that will be heard by all creation. He will say: Since I created you, I have remained silent for your sake. I watched your deeds and heard your words. So now, for My sake, remain silent. These are your records and your deeds, which will be read to you. Whoever finds good, let him praise Allah, and whoever finds otherwise, let him blame only himself. Then Allah will command Hell, and a neck will emerge from it, saying: O criminals! Separate yourselves today. Did I not make a covenant with you... (until) the statement: ‘He (Satan) led astray a great multitude of you. Did you not use reason?’” He said: “Allah will judge between all His creation except jinn and mankind, and will exact retribution between them, even to the point that He will exact retribution for the horned one from the hornless one. When no one has any claim left against another, Allah the Exalted will say: Be dust! At that moment, the disbeliever will say: Would that I were dust! Then Allah will judge between the jinn and mankind. The first matter to be judged will be blood (murder). The one who used to kill in the world will be brought, who did so according to Allah’s Book and command, and the slain will be brought, his head raised, blood flowing from his veins. They will say: Our Lord! This person killed me. Allah will say to him, though He knows best: Why did you kill him? He will say: I killed him so that honor and dominance would be for You. Allah will say: You have spoken the truth. Allah will make his face shine like the sun, and the angels will accompany him to Paradise. Then the one who used to kill in the world for dominance, not by Allah’s command, will be brought, and the slain will be brought, his head raised, blood flowing from his veins. They (the slain) will say: Our Lord! He killed us. Allah will say to him, though He knows best: Why did you kill them? He will say: I killed them so that honor and dominance would be for me. Allah will say: You are ruined, ruined. Allah will blacken his face and make his eyes blue. For every soul he killed, he will be killed in return. Then Allah will judge between the rest of His creation, even to the point that He will require the one who mixed water with milk to separate the water from the milk. When no one has any responsibility left against another, a caller will announce to all creation: Listen! Every people who used to worship anything besides Allah, let them join their deity. Whoever used to worship anything besides Allah will be formed in the image of his deity and presented before him. On that Day, an angel will be made to resemble ‘Aziz (peace be upon him), and the Jews will follow him, and an angel will be made to resemble ‘Isa (peace be upon him), and the Christians will follow him. Then their deities will lead them to Hell. Regarding this, Allah the Exalted says: ‘If they had been (true) gods, they would not have entered it.’” He said: “Then Allah will come to them in whatever awe He wills and say: O people! The people have gone. Join those you used to worship besides Allah. They will say: We have no deity but Allah; we used to worship none but Him. So He will separate from them, and Allah will be among them. Then He will come to them in whatever awe He wills and say: O people! Join those you used to worship besides Allah with your deities. They will say: We used to worship none but Allah. He will say: I am your Lord. Is there any sign between you and your Lord by which you recognize Him?” He said: “Then the covering will be lifted from the shin, and Allah’s greatness will be revealed to them, by which they will recognize that He is their Lord. So they will fall in prostration, and Allah will make the backs of the hypocrites as stiff as the horns of a bull/cow, so they will fall on their backs. Then Allah will permit them to raise their heads, and a bridge as thin as a hair or as sharp as a sword will be set up between the two ends of Hell. On it will be hooks and thorns like the thorns of Sa‘dan grass. It will be a slippery bridge. They will cross it as quickly as the blink of an eye, lightning, wind, swift horses, camels, and fast men. Some will cross safely, and some will be scratched but will succeed. Many of Allah’s creation will fall into Hell, destroyed by their deeds. Some will be seized by the fire up to their feet and not beyond, some up to half their shins, some up to their waist, and some will be completely engulfed by the fire except for their faces. Allah has forbidden the fire to touch the face, so it will be safe. When the people of Paradise proceed to Paradise and the people of Hell to Hell, they will say: ‘Who will intercede for us with our Lord so that He may admit us to Paradise?’ He said: ‘They will say: Who is more deserving of this than your father Adam (peace be upon him)? Allah created him with His own hand, breathed into him of His spirit, and spoke to him directly. So they will come to Adam (peace be upon him) and request him, but he will refuse, saying: Go to Nuh (peace be upon him), for he is the first Messenger of Allah. So they will go to Nuh (peace be upon him) and request him, but he will remember something and say: I am not fit for it. Go to Ibrahim (peace be upon him), for Allah made him His close friend. So they will come to Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and request him, but he will say: I am not fit for it. Go to Musa (peace be upon him), for Allah spoke to him and revealed the Torah to him. So they will come to Musa (peace be upon him) and request him, but he will say: I am not fit for it. Go to the Spirit of Allah and His Word, ‘Isa ibn Maryam (peace be upon him). So they will go to ‘Isa (peace be upon him) and request him, but he will say: I am not fit for it, but I will guide you. Go to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).’” He said: “So they will come to me, and I have three intercessions with my Lord, which He promised me.” He said: “So I will come to Paradise and take hold of the ring (handle) of the door and ask for it to be opened, and it will be opened for me. I will be greeted and welcomed, and I will enter Paradise. When I enter it, I will see my Lord upon His Throne and will fall in prostration as long as Allah wills. Allah will teach me words of praise and glorification that He has not taught to any of His creation. Then He will say: O Muhammad (peace be upon you)! Raise your head, intercede, your intercession will be accepted, ask, and you will be given. I will say: O Lord! My Ummah, those of my Ummah who have fallen into Hell. Allah will say: Go and bring out from the Fire whoever you recognize by their faces. So they will be brought out, and not one will remain in Hell. Then Allah will say: Go and bring out whoever has faith equal to a dinar in his heart. Then He will say: Whoever has two-thirds of a dinar, then half a dinar, then a qirat, then go and bring out whoever has faith equal to a mustard seed in his heart.” He said: “So they will be brought out and will enter Paradise.” He said: “By the One in Whose hand is the soul of Muhammad (peace be upon him)! When you enter Paradise, you will recognize your dwellings and spouses better than you recognized them in the world.” He said: “They will come out, then Allah will command regarding intercession, and the intercession of every Prophet, martyr, and believer will be accepted, except for the one who curses excessively, for he will not be written as a martyr nor will he be permitted to intercede. Then Allah will say: I am the Most Merciful of the merciful. Then Allah will bring out from Hell so many people that only He knows their number. He will place them in a river called «حيوان», and they will grow in it as a seed grows in the silt carried by a flood. Those in the sun will be greener, and those in the shade will be yellower.” He said: “When the Arabs heard this from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), they said: O Messenger of Allah! It is as if you were in the countryside? Then they will sprout in their decayed bodies like ants, and around their necks will be written «الجھنميون» ‘Freed by the Most Merciful.’ The people of Paradise will recognize them by this inscription. They will remain like this as long as Allah wills. Then they will say: O our Lord! Remove this name («الجھنميون») from us. So Allah will remove it from them.”
