Hadith 938

Ubaid Sanuta narrated: I went to Umm Muhammad (Khawla bint Qais, may Allah be pleased with her), who was the wife of Hamza bin Abdul Muttalib, may Allah be pleased with him. After him, a man named Hanzala married her. She (Khawla) said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came one day to the daughter of Hamza, and she mentioned the emirates to him. So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The world is lush and green, so whoever takes from it with its due right, Allah will bless it for that person. Sometimes, for the one who indulges in Allah’s wealth according to his own desires, there will be the fire of Hell on the Day of Resurrection."

Explanation & Benefits

Benefits:
From the aforementioned hadith, it is understood that the wealth of this world is good and beloved to the heart. If this wealth is earned through lawful (halal) means, then there is blessing (barakah) in it. However, there is no blessing in unlawful (haram) wealth, even if it is abundant. And Allah, the Possessor of Majesty, has also commanded people to eat what is lawful: ﴿يٰٓاَيُّهَا النَّاسُ كُلُوا مِمَّا فِي الْاَرْضِ حَلَالًا طَيِّبًا﴾ (al-Baqarah: 168) .... “O people! Eat from whatever is on the earth that is lawful and pure.”

Those who unlawfully intrude upon the wealth of Allah, the Possessor of Majesty: .... The wording in Sahih al-Bukhari is that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: ((Indeed, there are men who misuse the wealth of Allah without right, so for them is the Fire on the Day of Resurrection.)) (Bukhari, no. 3118) .... “Some people squander the wealth of Allah without justification; for them is the Fire on the Day of Resurrection.”

It is thus understood that it is forbidden to spend the spoils of war (mal al-ghanīmah) or wealth dedicated to the path of Allah recklessly and without right.
