Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits: From the aforementioned hadith, it is understood that one should laugh little and weep much. Regarding the words of the hadith, “If you knew what I know,” there are several statements whose meaning is approximately the same: The intent of the statement of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is that I have knowledge of the matters of the Hereafter, its hardships, the terrors of Hell, the punishment of sinners, and the realities of death and the grave, etc. If you were to know (these realities), then you would laugh very little. (Fath al-Bari: 11/527-528)
The statement of Hasan al-Basri rahimahullah is: Whoever knows that death is certain to come, the Day of Resurrection will be established, and that he will have to stand before Allah and give account, then it is necessary for him that he spend a long portion of his life in this world in sorrow and grief. (Fath al-Bari: 11/319-320)
A poet says: May your constant laughter not destroy you; In moments of solitude, sometimes weep as well.
