Hadith 925

With this (previous) chain, it is narrated from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, that he said to them: "Do you know what «نميمة» is?" They replied: Allah and His Messenger know best. He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "It is conveying people's words to others in order to create discord among them." And he, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "If a man had two valleys full of wealth, he would seek a third valley. Nothing will fill the belly of man except the dust (of the grave), and Allah forgives whom He wills."

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits:
➊ ... The meaning of tale-bearing (namimah) becomes clear from the aforementioned hadith: conveying one person's words to another in order to spread discord. Regarding such people, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said in Sahih Muslim, Hadith no. 105: ((Lā yadkhulu al-jannata nammām.)) ... "The tale-bearer will not enter Paradise."

From this, it is understood that tale-bearing is forbidden (haram), and Allah, the Possessor of Majesty, has mentioned one of the attributes of the disbelievers: ﴿هَمَّازٍ مَّشَّآءٍ بنَمِيمٍ﴾ (al-Qalam: 11) ... "A great slanderer, going about with malicious gossip."

Why has the Shari‘ah given such a severe warning? The reason is that tale-bearing severs the root of mutual love and affection, and the tale-bearer destroys the fabric of society.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhuma) that the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) passed by two graves and said: "They are being punished, and not for something major (difficult to avoid); one of them did not protect himself from his urine, and the other was a 'fakāna yamshī bin-namīmah'—a tale-bearer." (Sahih Bukhari, Hadith no. 218)

➋ ... In the aforementioned hadith, there is mention of man's greed for worldly wealth. Love of wealth is not inherently a bad thing, because it is naturally present, but when the interest becomes so great that love of wealth makes one heedless of religion, then this condition is destructive.

If one possesses wealth, then zakat and charity should be given from it, and one should not be boastful or arrogant, but rather express gratitude to Allah, the Possessor of Majesty. However, if the purpose of acquiring wealth is to boast over others, then such love of wealth is not permissible. Allah the Exalted says: ﴿اَلْهٰكُمُ التَّكَاثُرُ﴾ (al-Takathur: 1) "The mutual rivalry for piling up (worldly gains) diverts you (from the remembrance of Allah)."

In another hadith, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: "Two hungry wolves let loose among sheep do not cause as much damage as a man's greed for wealth and status does to his religion." (Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Hadith no. 2376. Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah has graded it as sahih.)

At the end of the aforementioned hadith, it is stated that only dust (i.e., the grave) will fill the human soul. The meaning is that a person's heart is never satisfied throughout his life; only when he is buried in the grave will his greed come to an end.
