Hadith 918

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I was walking in the date gardens of Madinah in the company of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), when he said: "Abu Hurairah! Those who possess much wealth will be ruined. Indeed, those who possess much wealth will be the lowest, except for the one who spends like this, like this, and like this," meaning in front of him, behind him, to his right, and to his left. Then he narrated to the end as in the previous hadith (No. 266, 265).

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits:
➊ From the aforementioned hadith, it is understood that wealth and riches are a cause of destruction, except when their due rights are fulfilled, because spending such wealth becomes a means of increasing good deeds. Allah the Exalted says: ﴿Woe to every scorner and mocker, who collects wealth and [continuously] counts it. He thinks that his wealth will make him immortal.﴾ ( , al-Humazah: 1–3) ... “Destruction is for every taunter, great fault-finder, who amasses wealth and keeps counting it. He thinks his wealth will remain forever.”

➋ ... From the aforementioned hadith, the virtue of “la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah” is also established. (See regarding this: Hadith and Explanation: 251)

➌ ... It is understood that Allah, the Possessor of Majesty, has this right over people that He alone be worshipped, because Allah, the Possessor of Majesty, created humans and jinn only for His worship. Allah the Exalted says: ﴿And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.﴾ ( , adh-Dhariyat: 56) ... “I have created the jinn and mankind only so that they may worship Me.”

What is the meaning of worship? Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah rahimahullah states that Imam Qurtubi rahimahullah said: In essence, worship is the name of humility and submission, and the acts of the Shariah are called worship because those who are legally responsible perform these acts before Allah with humility and submissiveness.

Imam Ibn Kathir rahimahullah says: The meaning of worship of Allah the Exalted is to fulfill those actions which Allah has commanded and to refrain from those which He has prohibited, and this is the reality of the religion of Islam, because the meaning of Islam is to be so obedient to Allah that one reaches the utmost in obedience and humility. (Fath al-Majid: p. 14)

From the above hadith, the virtue of tawhid (monotheism) is also established, as if whoever does not associate partners with Allah, the Possessor of Majesty, will be saved from the punishment of Allah. But regarding the polytheists, Allah, the Possessor of Majesty, says: ﴿Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills.﴾ ( , an-Nisa: 48) ... “Indeed, Allah will never forgive the one who commits shirk (associates partners with Him), and He will forgive whatever is less than that for whomever He wills.”
