Hadith 909

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace be upon him) said: "If a mukatab (a slave with a contract of manumission) is killed, the blood money for the portion he has paid for his freedom will be given as that of a free man, and for the portion he remains a slave, the blood money will be given as that of a slave."

Benefits:
A mukatab is a slave who has made an agreement with his master that he will become free upon paying a specified sum. From the mentioned hadith, it is understood that when a mukatab slave has paid a portion of his contract amount and is then killed, his blood money (diyah) should be given in such a way that for the portion in which he is free, the diyah of a free man is paid, and for the portion in which he remains a slave, the diyah of a slave is paid. For example, if a free man kills someone, the diyah is one hundred camels. If a slave does so, it is fifty camels. Now, if he is half free and half slave, then half of the diyah for freedom, i.e., twenty-five camels, and half of the diyah for slavery, i.e., twelve camels and one young camel, will be paid.
