Hadith 897

Shahr bin Hawshab narrated: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) sent an army. They passed by a Bedouin who was among his flock of goats. They said to him: "Slaughter for us." So he brought a goat to them. They said: "This one is thin." He brought another, and they said: "This one is also thin." Then they caught a fat, healthy goat, slaughtered it, and ate it. When the heat of the day became intense and his goats were in his shelter, they said to him: "Bring your goats out so that we may take shade in this shelter." He said: "My goat has just given birth. If I bring her out, she will immediately be affected by the heat and become deformed." They said: "Our lives are dearer to us than your goat." So they forced him to bring it out, and it went outside. He then went to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and informed him. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) waited until the army returned. Then he asked them, and they began to swear by Allah that they had not done so. The Bedouin said: "By Allah! What I have told you is what they did." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) looked at one of the men among them and said: "If there is any good among them, it is in him." Then he asked him, and he told him exactly as the Bedouin had said. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "You fall into lying just as moths fall into fire. Every lie is certainly written as a lie except for three: a lie in war, for war is deception; a lie to reconcile between two people; and a man lying to his wife to please her."
