Hadith 88

Abu Zar’ah narrated: I entered a house in the company of Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), which was being built in Madinah for Sa’id or Marwan. When Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) performed ablution, he washed his hands up to the armpits and his feet up to the knees. I said to Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him): What is this? He replied: This is the utmost limit of purification (the final extent of attaining purity). The narrator stated: He saw a painter making a picture in the house, so he said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, says: Who can be more unjust than the one who tries to create like My creation? Let them create a particle, let them create a grain.”

In another hadith, it is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu that I heard the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam saying: “Indeed, the individuals of my ummah will come on the Day of Resurrection with their limbs shining due to the effects of ablution (wudu). Therefore, whoever among you is able to increase this brightness should do so.” (Muslim, no. 246)

There is a difference of opinion regarding the words at the end of the hadith—whether they are from the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam or from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu. Regarding this, the Saudi Permanent Committee for Ifta has given the fatwa that these words are from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu. (Fatawa al-Lajnah al-Da’imah, vol. 5, p. 201)

(2).... From the aforementioned hadith, there is also established a severe warning for image-makers (musawwirin).

In Sahih al-Bukhari, it is stated that on the Day of Resurrection, those who will be subjected to the most severe punishment will be the image-makers. (Bukhari, no. 5950)

In another narration, it is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Talhah radi Allahu anhu that indeed the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “The angels do not enter a house in which there is a dog or an image.” (Bukhari, Kitab al-Libas, no. 5949)

Muslims have hung up pictures of saints and the like on walls for the purpose of seeking blessings, whereas these pictures are not a means of blessing at all; rather, they are a cause of being deprived of mercy and blessing.
