Hadith 83

Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace be upon him) said: "When a dog puts its mouth in the vessel of any one of you, then wash it seven times, and one of those times with earth."

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits:
From the aforementioned hadith, it is understood that if a dog puts its mouth into a vessel, it should be washed seven times. The majority (jumhur) hold the position that washing it seven times is obligatory, while the Hanafis say: washing it seven times is recommended (mustahabb) and washing it three times is obligatory. (Bidayat al-Mujtahid: 1/83; al-Mughni: 1/52) The position of the Hanafis is based on the statement of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah radi Allahu anhu. (Sunan al-Daraqutni: 1/83) However, the statement of washing it seven times is also transmitted from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah radi Allahu anhu.
(Nayl al-Awtar: 1/76; Sabil al-Salam: 1/28)
Therefore, the statement of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah radi Allahu anhu should also be adopted which is closer to the command of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. In the above-mentioned hadith, it is stated that one of the washings should be with soil. Should this be done the first time, in the middle, or at the end?
In Sahih Muslim it is stated: ((Ulaahunna bi-t-turab)) (Muslim, no. 279) ... "The first time with soil."
In Jami‘ al-Tirmidhi it is stated: ((Ukhraahunna aw ulaahunna bi-t-turab)) (Sunan al-Tirmidhi, no. 91) ... "The last time or the first time with soil."
It is better that the first time be with soil, because in Sahih Muslim the command is for the first washing. There is also a difference of opinion among the scholars as to whether only the saliva of the dog is impure (najis) or its entire body as well. Regarding this, the Shafi‘is and Hanbalis say that the dog and everything of it is impure. (al-Mughni: 1/52)
The Malikis say that neither the dog nor its saliva is impure. (al-Sharh al-Saghir: 1/43)
The position of the Hanafis is that only the saliva, mouth, and feces of the dog are impure, and apart from this, the dog itself is not impure, because it is used for guarding and similar purposes. (Fath al-Qadir: 1/64)
The opinion preferred by Allamah Shawkani rahimahullah is that, due to the aforementioned hadith, only the saliva of the dog is impure, and apart from this, its other parts such as hair, flesh, and skin are pure, because the original ruling is purity, and there is no clear evidence regarding the impurity of its essence.
