Hadith 820

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever loves to meet Allah, Allah loves to meet him; and whoever dislikes to meet Allah, Allah dislikes to meet him." The narrator stated: I came to Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) and said to her: If what Abu Hurairah narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is true, then we are doomed. She said: The one who is doomed is the one who is doomed by the statement of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then she said: What does he narrate? I said: He says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever loves to meet Allah, Allah loves to meet him; and whoever dislikes to meet Allah, Allah dislikes to meet him." She said: I heard this from him (peace and blessings be upon him), "Do you know when this will be? This will be when, at the time of death, the gaze is raised, when the breath is constricted in the chest, the fingers are wounded, and the hair stands on end. At that time, whoever loves to meet Allah, Allah loves to meet him; and whoever dislikes to meet Him, Allah dislikes to meet him."

Benefits:
From the aforementioned hadith, it is understood that at the time of death, one should have eagerness to meet Allah Dhul-Jalal and should not grieve over leaving the world. Likewise, at all times, those who desire to meet Allah Dhul-Jalal and do not associate anyone with Him in worship should remain engaged in the worship of Allah Dhul-Jalal. “So whoever hopes for the meeting with his Lord, let him do righteous deeds and not associate anyone in the worship of his Lord.”

It is narrated in Sahih Muslim from Sayyidah Aisha radi Allahu anha that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Whoever loves to meet Allah, Allah also loves to meet him. And whoever dislikes to meet Allah, Allah also dislikes to meet him.” It was asked: O Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam! Disliking death is an expression of dislike for meeting Allah, and all of us (naturally) dislike death? The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “It is not that; rather, what is meant is the state at the time of death. When (the servant) is given the glad tidings of Allah’s mercy and forgiveness, he loves to meet Allah, so Allah also loves to meet him. And when he is given the tidings of Allah’s punishment, he dislikes to meet Allah (he becomes fearful of dying), so Allah Dhul-Jalal also dislikes to meet him.” (Muslim, Kitab al-Dhikr wa’l-Du‘a, No: 2684)

Because at the time of death, the believer is given the glad tidings of Paradise, and the disbeliever is warned of Allah’s punishment. From this, the believer’s eagerness to meet Allah Dhul-Jalal increases, while the disbeliever sees his own destruction, and his heart is filled with regret, wishing that death would not come to him.

The eagerness that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam had to meet Allah was such that when he was given the choice, he chose death, and the last words on his blessed tongue were: “Allahumma bil-rafiq al-a‘la.”
