Hadith 817

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace be upon him) said: “Allah curses the one who sacrifices (an animal) in the name of other than Allah, Allah curses the one who changes the boundaries of the land, Allah curses the one who misleads a blind person from the path, Allah curses the one who abuses his parents, Allah curses the one who claims someone other than his masters as his master, Allah curses the one who does the act of the people of Lot, and Allah curses the one who does the act of the people of Lot.”

Explanation & Benefits

Benefits:
➊ From the mentioned hadith, it is understood that those who slaughter in the name of other than Allah are accursed. That is, just as one offers sacrifice for Allah’s pleasure or slaughters an animal during Hajj, similarly, to slaughter in the name of an idol, grave, or a saintly person so that they may be pleased is an act deserving of curse and is manifest shirk (major polytheism). For example, among us, ignorant people take their newborn child to the grave of some saint, shave the child’s head there, slaughter a goat, and say that they had made a vow to the one in the grave that if a child is born to them, they would come to his grave and slaughter a goat. Along with this, they also hold the belief that it was the saint in the grave who gave them the son, and some ignorant people even name the child “Peeran Ditta” (meaning, “given by the saint”), i.e., this boy was given—Allah forbid—by the saint, not by Allah. This is a polytheistic belief.

➋ ... The one who changes the boundaries of land: In one narration, the words are: ((سَرَقَ مَنَارَ الْاَرْضِ))—to change the boundaries of land. This act is mostly done by rural farmers. They cut the boundary ridges between fields and try to merge another’s field into their own. The markers set to distinguish between fields and lands are stolen or removed so that it is not known whose land extends to where. Then, finding an opportunity, they merge another’s land into their own overnight. Besides agricultural lands, in urban and residential properties, making fraudulent maps to get approval, bribing the land record officer (patwari) to get someone else’s land registered in one’s own name—all these are included in this accursed act.

➌ ... Guiding someone on the road is a great reward. As the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Whoever gave someone an animal to drink milk from, or showed someone (who asked) a street, or explained the way, he will have the reward equal to freeing a slave.” (Adab al-Mufrad, no. 890) But if someone misleads another from the path or gives wrong directions, he will be deprived of reward and will be deserving of curse.

➍ ... It is understood that whoever curses his parents, upon him is Allah’s curse. The Shariah has not even allowed saying “uff” (a word of annoyance), so how can there be allowance for cursing or abusing? “Do not say to them ‘uff’ and do not scold them, but address them with honor.” To abuse someone’s parents is as if to abuse one’s own parents, because you initiated it, and in response, the other abused your parents, so you yourself became the cause for your parents to be abused.

➎ ... It is understood that to attribute oneself to someone other than one’s master is among the major sins.

➏ Those who commit the act of the people of Lut (homosexuality) are accursed.
