Tawoos (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated: It was asked from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) about the explanation of this verse: «ما أسألكم عليه من أجر إلا المودة في القربى» "I do not ask you for any reward for this (invitation and preaching) except love for kinship." So Saeed bin Jubair (may Allah have mercy on him) said: By kinship is meant the family of Muhammad (peace be upon him). Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: You have been hasty, you have been hasty, because the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was not from the offspring of Quraysh except that he had kinship among them, so the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Maintain the ties of kinship that exist between me and them."

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits: The meaning of the verse is that I do not ask you for any reward for admonition, advice, preaching, or calling to Allah; however, I do ask for one thing: that you consider the kinship that exists between us. If you do not wish to accept my call, then do not accept it—that is your choice—but at least refrain from harming me. If you cannot be my supporters, then at least, by virtue of our relationship and kinship, do not cause me distress, and do not become an obstacle in my path such that I am unable to fulfill the duty of Prophethood.
