Hadith 804

Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) named Lady Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her) as Barrah, and this was because one day he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Is Maymunah here?" So they replied: No.

Hadith Takhrij «اسناده مرسل صحيح .»
Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits:
In Adab al-Mufrad, it is narrated that Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah radi Allahu anhu states: The name of Sayyidah Maymunah radi Allahu anha was Barrah. The Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam changed her name to Maymunah. (Adab al-Mufrad, no. 832)

Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah has declared this narration as shaadh (anomalous). In the authentic narration, it is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhuma that the (original) name of Sayyidah Juwayriyyah was Barrah. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam changed it to Juwayriyyah. He disliked that it be said: “He has come out from (the house of) Barrah.” (Silsilat al-Sahihah, no. 212; Adab al-Mufrad, no. 831)

Similarly, in another hadith, it is mentioned that the name of Sayyidah Zaynab was Barrah. It was said that she declares herself to be pure. The Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam changed her name to Zaynab. (Bukhari, no. 6192; Sunan Ibn Majah, no. 3732)
