Sayyida Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever defends his (Muslim) brother in his absence, it is incumbent upon Allah to free him from Hell."

Hadith Takhrij«سنن ترمذي ، ابواب البرولصلة ، باب الذب عن عرض المسلم ، رقم : 1931 . قال الشيخ الالباني : صحيح . مسند احمد : 449/6 .»
Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits: The mentioned hadith clearly demonstrates the virtue of defending the honor of a Muslim brother. What does defense mean? If, in a gathering, someone is finding fault with another, then those who hear it should stop the one who is backbiting or fault-finding.
There are many such examples from the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum), as is found in the lengthy hadith regarding the trial and repentance of Sayyiduna Ka‘b ibn Malik (radi Allahu anhu) on the occasion of the Battle of Tabuk: The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was sitting in Tabuk when he asked, “What did Ka‘b ibn Malik do?” A man from Banu Salamah said, “O Messenger of Allah! The beauty of his two cloaks and his looking at his own shoulders kept him from coming here.” Sayyiduna Mu‘adh ibn Jabal (radi Allahu anhu) said, “What you have said is evil. By Allah, O Messenger of Allah! We know nothing about him except good.” (Bukhari, Book of Expeditions, no. 4418; Muslim, no. 2769)
In such gatherings where a Muslim is being backbitten, if possible, one should stop those people; if one does not have the power to stop them, then it is better to leave the gathering.
