Hadith 795

Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: When this verse was revealed: "Whoever does evil will be recompensed for it," it was hard on the Muslims and caused them great distress. They complained about it to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so he said: "Remain close and adopt moderation. Whatever hardship befalls a believer, it is an expiation for him, even if a thorn pricks him (that too is a cause for expiation)."

Benefits:
In the aforementioned hadith, the etiquettes of greeting (salam) have been explained. The wisdoms behind the mentioned order of initiating salam have been stated by the scholars according to their own understanding; the real wisdom is only with Allah, and He alone has complete knowledge of it.

➊ ... The rider to the one walking: This is because Allah, the Exalted, has granted him the blessing of riding, so it is his duty to show humility. If the one walking were commanded to greet the rider first, there would be a risk that arrogance might develop in the heart of the rider.

➋ ... The one walking to the one sitting: This is because it is difficult for the one sitting to repeatedly turn his attention to the passerby and greet him. Whereas the passerby does not face such difficulty.

➌ ... The fewer to the more: This is because the majority has a greater right over the minority, and also so that the larger group greets the smaller group or the individual first, lest self-admiration and arrogance arise.

It is narrated in Sahih al-Bukhari: ((Yusallimu as-saghiru ‘ala al-kabir)) (Bukhari, no. 6234) “The younger should greet the elder.”

➍ ... The command for the younger to initiate the greeting is because the elder has a greater right over the younger, since the younger is commanded to show respect to the elder and to behave with proper manners towards him.

However, if the person who is supposed to initiate the greeting does not do so, then the other should greet instead. For the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam greatly emphasized the spreading of salam. And it is established from hadith that the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would even greet small children.
