Hadith 781

Abdur-Razzaq informed us, Ma'mar narrated to us, from Isma'il ibn Umayyah, who said: Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him, said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The one who strives for the widow and the poor is like the one who fights in the way of Allah. And I and the sponsor of the orphan will be like this," and he gestured with his index and middle fingers.

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits:
From the aforementioned hadith, it is understood that supporting and looking after the needy in society—such as destitute widows, orphans, and disabled people—is a tremendously virtuous act. Islam has equated this with the great act of jihad fi sabilillah (striving in the path of Allah), from which its importance can be gauged. However, it is unfortunate that Muslims have abandoned these great deeds, while Christians and Qadianis have taken advantage of the helplessness of the needy and are now bringing them into their respective religions.

➊ ... In another hadith, it is narrated by Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu from the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam: “The one who strives to provide for widows and the poor is like the one who fights in the path of Allah, and like the one who fasts all day and stands in prayer all night.” (Silsilat al-Sahihah, no. 2881; Adab al-Mufrad: 131)

➋ ... From the aforementioned hadith, the virtue of the one who supports an orphan is also made clear. Just as these two fingers are close together, so will I (the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and the one who cares for an orphan be close together in Paradise. However, there will be a difference in rank, which is indicated by the difference in the size of the fingers themselves.

Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah writes in Fath al-Bari that this points to the difference in rank between the two.
