Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace be upon him) said: "A man is upon the religion of his close friend, so let one of you look at whom he befriends."

Benefits:
From the aforementioned hadith, it is understood that friendship has an effect on a person's character. If the friend is good, he will have a good influence on his companion; if the friend is bad, the influence will also be bad.

Modern science today also acknowledges the above Prophetic statement. A sociologist and psychologist has presented the effect of friendship in the following way: the friendship of good people makes a person good, while the friendship of bad people makes a person bad, because a friend imitates his friend. Whoever befriends those who pray (the worshippers), he becomes one who prays, and whoever befriends kings, he becomes a king. Therefore, when forming friendships, one should see whether the person is religious or not, because if he is righteous, the company of the righteous will make him righteous, and the company of the wicked will make him wicked.

As narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash‘ari radi Allahu anhu, indeed the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “The example of a good companion and a bad companion is like the one who carries musk and the one who blows the bellows (of a blacksmith). The musk carrier will either give you (some musk) as a gift, or you will buy it from him, or at the very least, you will get a pleasant fragrance from him. And the bellows-blower will either burn your clothes, or you will get a foul odor from him.” (Bukhari, Kitab al-Dhaba’ih, no. 5534; Muslim, Kitab al-Birr wa al-Silah, no. 2628)

A poet has expressed the hadith in his own words as follows:
Wherever perfume is being drawn, go there,
One day you will return with your clothes scented.
Wherever fire is burning, go there,
One day you will return with your clothes burnt.
Granted, you kept saving your clothes,
But you kept receiving the heat of the fire.
