Hadith 774

Abdullah narrated: For any of you to have his belly filled with pus is better for him than to have it filled with poetry. Atiq narrated: I mentioned this to Yazid bin Al-Asam, so he said: I heard Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) mention the same from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him).

Explanation & Benefits

Benefits:
From the aforementioned hadith, it is understood that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) did not like to be excessively occupied with poetry. Regarding the above-mentioned hadith, Abu Ali al-Luluwi rahimahullah said that the statement of Abu Ubayd has reached us, that what is meant by this is that a person becomes so engrossed in poetry that he becomes heedless of the Qur’an and the remembrance of Allah (which is extremely blameworthy). However, if the Qur’an and the pursuit of knowledge remain predominant, then in our view, such a person does not fall under the purview of the one whose belly is filled with poetry. (: Sunan Abi Dawud, no. 5009)

This also refers to bad poetry; there is no harm in reciting or listening to good poetry—it is permissible. As Sayyiduna Hassan ibn Thabit radi Allahu anhu used to recite poetry, and it is mentioned in Sahih al-Bukhari that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “O Hassan! Respond on behalf of the Messenger of Allah to the polytheists. O Allah! Support him with the Holy Spirit.” (: Bukhari, no. 6152)
