Hadith 765

Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever names (his child) after my name, then he should not take my kunyah, and whoever takes my kunyah, then he should not name (his child) after my name."

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits:
In another hadith, it is narrated that Sayyiduna Anas radi Allahu anhu reports: The Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was in the marketplace when a man called out, “O Abu al-Qasim!” The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam turned towards him (but realized that he was calling someone else). Upon this, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Name yourselves after me, but do not take my kunyah (patronymic).” (Bukhari, no. 3537)

Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah has mentioned the differing opinions of the scholars in “Fath al-Bari”:
➊ According to some, the prohibition is absolute.
➋ Some have said that combining both (the name and the kunyah) is prohibited.
➌ Some have said: this prohibition was only during his lifetime. The preferred opinion is that the prohibition was only during his lifetime. Now, it is permissible to have both the name and the kunyah. (Fath al-Bari: 10/699. Explanation of hadith 6187, 6188, 6189, published by Qadimi Kutub Khana, Karachi)

Supporting the preferred opinion is also this narration: Sayyiduna Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyyah rahimahullah reports that Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu had this permission from the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam (the details of which are as follows): He said, “O Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam! If a son is born to me after you, may I name him after your name and give him your kunyah?” The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Yes.” (Adab al-Mufrad, no. 843; Silsilah Sahihah, no. 2946)
