Hadith 751

أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ، نا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ أَبِي مَيْمُونَةَ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَبَا رَافِعٍ، يُحَدَّثُ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ: كَانَ اسْمُ زَيْنَبَ أَوْ مَيْمُونَةَ بَرَّةً، فَسَمَّاهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ زَيْنَبَ أَوْ مَيْمُونَةَ.
Narrated by Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him): The name of Zaynab or Maymunah was Barrah, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) changed her name to Zaynab or Maymunah.

It is understood that in the aforementioned narration, the narrator is uncertain whether it was Sayyidah Zaynab or Sayyidah Maymunah radi Allahu anhuma whose name was Barrah. In "Adab al-Mufrad" by al-Bukhari, it is stated that Sayyidah Maymunah radi Allahu anha's name was Barrah. Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah says that this narration is shaadh (irregular).
