Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits: From the aforementioned hadith, it is understood that a name can be changed. "Barrah" means virtuous or righteous, and since this name carried a hint of self-praise and people would also mention it, the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) changed her name. Although there is an aspect of praise in good names in general, in this particular name it was excessive.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhuma) that the (original) name of Sayyidah Juwayriyyah (radi Allahu anha) was Barrah. The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) changed it to Juwayriyyah. The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) disliked that it be said: "You have come out from Barrah." (Silsilat al-Sahihah, no. 212)
