Benefits:
From the aforementioned hadith, it is understood that a good dream is from Allah, the Possessor of Majesty, which Allah, exalted is He, shows to a Muslim believer as glad tidings and for the tranquility of his heart during his life. The statement of Allah, the Exalted, is: ﴿لَهُمُ الْبُشْرٰی فِی الْحَیٰوةِ الدُّنْیَا وَ فِی الْاٰخِرَةِ﴾ ().... “For them are glad tidings in the life of this world and in the Hereafter.”
Some of the righteous predecessors (salaf salihin) have said that what is meant by this is the dream of a righteous, pious person which he sees, or which is shown concerning him. It is thus understood that a disliked (bad) dream is from Satan, by which he wishes to trouble and terrify the believer; therefore, one should not pay attention to the deception of Satan nor give heed to it. One should seek refuge with Allah, the Exalted, from the evil of that dream and from the evil of the accursed Satan. Seeking refuge (ta‘awwudh) means turning towards Allah, the Exalted, for protection and support. The divine statement is: ﴿وَ مَنْ یَّعْتَصِمْ بِاللّٰهِ فَقَدْ هُدِیَ اِلٰی صِرَاطٍ مُّسْتَقِیْمٍ﴾ ().... “Whoever holds firmly to Allah has indeed been guided to a straight path.”
The purpose of spitting three times to the left is that Satan comes to a person from his left side in order to cast a whisper (waswasah) into his heart, and since the heart is on the left side, Satan approaches from the nearest direction to it. In the aforementioned hadith, it is stated that a bad dream should not be related to anyone, because the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “The dream is suspended on the foot of a bird as long as it is not interpreted; when it is interpreted, it happens (accordingly).” (Sunan Abi Dawud, no. 5020)
The meaning is that if something is on the foot of a bird, then with a slight movement of the bird, it falls off; similarly, when a dream is interpreted, it comes to pass. Some have also said that something held in the claw of a bird may fall or may not fall; likewise, the interpretation of a dream may come to pass as interpreted, or it may not.
