Hadith 744

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Nothing of prophethood remains except the righteous servant's dream, and it is one forty-sixth part of prophethood."

Benefits:
From the mentioned hadith, it is understood that a good dream is the forty-sixth part of prophethood, and a good dream holds great status. It is from Allah Ta'ala, Who shows it to a servant as glad tidings and for the comfort and reassurance of the heart. "For them are glad tidings in the worldly life and in the Hereafter." There are three types of dreams:
(1) Good dreams: These are glad tidings from Allah Ta'ala, for the person who sees the dream or for whom it is shown.
(2) Those dreams which are from Satan: By this is meant the terror and fright that Satan shows a person in sleep, or those unpleasant examples which he brings to cause a person anxiety, grief, and restlessness.
(3) Psychological dreams: These are what a person sees and thinks about during the day, and just as he thinks about them during the day, he sees them in his sleep as well. And the forty-sixth part of prophethood: This is such that the period of prophethood of the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is twenty-three years, which makes 46 half-years. In the first six months of these 23 years, the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would see true dreams, and they would come true.

Imam Malik (rahimahullah) was asked: Is everyone qualified to interpret dreams? He replied: Can one play with prophethood? Yes, a true dream is a part of prophethood, but it should not be played with.

Imam Malik (rahimahullah) by no means intended that a true dream is among the remnants of prophethood. Rather, by "a part of prophethood," Imam Malik (rahimahullah) meant that just as prophethood is based on giving news of some matters of the unseen, similarly, a true dream also resembles prophethood in giving news of some matters of the unseen. Therefore, no one should begin interpreting dreams without knowledge; rather, he should remain silent. (: Irshad al-Sari: 10/123, 124)
