Hadith 741

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: "A man continues to do the deeds of the people of Paradise for seventy years, but when he reaches the last part of his life and makes a will, he does not observe fairness in his will, so his end is upon the deeds of the people of evil and he enters Hell. And a man continues to do the deeds of the people of evil for seventy years, but when he reaches the last part of his life and makes a will, he acts justly in his will, so Allah causes his end to be upon the deeds of the people of Paradise and he enters Paradise." Then Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) recited this verse: "Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger, He will admit him to Gardens beneath which rivers flow... to the end of the verse, that for him is a humiliating punishment."

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits:
From the aforementioned hadith, it is understood that a person should remain fearful of Allah, the Possessor of Majesty, while performing righteous deeds, and should not feel pride after doing good deeds, nor should he utter any inappropriate words at any time. Rather, he should continue to seek steadfastness from Allah, the Possessor of Majesty, and recite these supplications:

((Allahumma musarrif al-quloobi sarrif qalbi ‘ala ta‘atik)) (Muslim, Kitab al-Qadr: 2654)

﴿Rabbana la tuzigh quloobana ba‘da idh hadaytana wa hab lana min ladunka rahmah innaka anta al-wahhab﴾ (Aal ‘Imran: 8)
“O our Lord! Do not let our hearts deviate after You have guided us, and grant us mercy from Yourself. Surely, You are the Bestower.”

((Ya muqallib al-quloob thabbit qalbi ‘ala deenik)) (Sunan al-Tirmidhi, no. 3522)
“O Turner of the hearts! Make my heart firm upon Your religion.”

It is understood that a person should not deceive himself after performing righteous deeds by thinking that he has been forgiven, but rather, he should continue to supplicate, just as our master Yusuf alayhis salam did:

﴿Fatir as-samawati wal-ard anta waliyyi fi’d-dunya wal-akhirah tawaffani musliman wa alhiqni bis-salihin﴾ (Yusuf: 101)
“O Creator of the heavens and the earth! You are my Protector in this world and the Hereafter. Cause me to die as a Muslim and join me with the righteous.”

And similarly, if someone is sinful, he should not despair, but rather turn towards Allah, the Possessor of Majesty, and seek forgiveness for his sins. It is understood that until death, a person should continue to perform righteous deeds and strive not to do anything that would constitute disobedience to Allah, the Possessor of Majesty.
