Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits: The reason for the prohibition of the vessels mentioned in the above hadith was that the Arabs used to make wine in those vessels. So when wine was declared forbidden, the Shari‘ah also prohibited the use of those vessels, so that the desire for wine would not arise because of those vessels. However, when the aversion to wine became firmly established in the hearts of the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum), permission was granted to use those vessels.
As is found in Sahih Muslim, Sayyiduna Buraydah (radi Allahu anhu) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “I had forbidden you from using certain vessels; now you may prepare nabidh in them, but avoid every intoxicating drink.” (Muslim, Kitab al-Jana’iz, no. 977; Sunan Ibn Majah, no. 3405)
Whether the intoxicating drink is in a white jug or a green one, its consumption is forbidden. And if nabidh is not intoxicating, then it is permissible to drink it in any vessel. (Tanqih al-Ruwat: 3/222)
