Lady Umm Ayub (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stayed as a guest with us, so we prepared food for him. There was a (pungent-smelling) vegetable in it. When we presented it to him, he disliked it and said: "Eat it, for I am not like you among you. I fear that I might cause discomfort to (Gabriel, peace be upon him) who is with me."

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits: From the aforementioned hadith, it is understood that the angels dislike foul odors. Garlic, onion, radish, and wild leek are not forbidden, as is evident from Sahih Muslim, where Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub Ansari radi Allahu anhu says: (During the time the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam stayed with me) whenever food was presented to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, he would eat from it as he wished and send the remainder to me. One day, he sent the food back without eating from it, because it contained garlic. I asked him: “Is garlic forbidden?” He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam replied: “It is not forbidden, but I dislike it due to its unpleasant odor.” If there is such a degree of dislike in the Shariah regarding the odor of lawful things, then those people who use hookah and cigarettes, from which their mouths and clothes continuously emit odor, should reflect upon this.
It is narrated from Hazrat Ma’dan bin Abu Talhah Ya’mari rahimahullah that Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab radi Allahu anhu stood to deliver the sermon on Friday, and after praising Allah, he said: O people! You eat two plants, and I consider them bad, meaning garlic and onion. I saw during the time of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam that if the odor of (garlic or onion) was detected from a person, his hand would be taken and he would be led out towards the field of Baqi’. Therefore, whoever must eat them should cook them to remove their odor. (Sunan Ibn Majah, No. 3363)
