Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits: The aforementioned hadith establishes the virtue of olive oil. Allah, the Possessor of Majesty, has declared the olive tree a blessed tree in the Noble Qur’an: ﴿It is lit from [the oil of] a blessed tree—an olive tree—neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil would almost glow forth [of itself] even if no fire touched it.﴾ (al-Nur: 35).... “(That lamp) is lit from the oil of a blessed olive tree, which is neither eastern nor western; its oil is almost luminous by itself, even if fire does not touch it.”
Olive has numerous benefits; among all vegetable oils, olive is the most beneficial. It is consumed as food, its oil is used, and it is included as a key ingredient in various medicines.
Hafiz Ibn Kathir rahimahullah, while interpreting “wal-zaytun” (the olive), states: Ka‘b al-Ahbar, Qatadah, and Ibn Zayd rahimahumullah say that the olive is the tree of Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem). (Tafsir Ibn Kathir: 4/526)
And Allah, the Possessor of Majesty, has called the land of Bayt al-Maqdis a blessed land. He said: ﴿Glorified is He who took His servant by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al-Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed.﴾ (al-Isra: 1) “Exalted is Allah who took His servant by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al-Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed.”
Olive oil is warm and moist; these two qualities keep it balanced. It is an antidote and a laxative for poison. It expels intestinal worms and delays the onset of old age. It strengthens the gums. Its use strengthens the hair and other body parts; except for olive oil, all other oils weaken the stomach. (al-At‘imah al-Qur’aniyyah Ghida’ wa Dawa’ by Muhammad Kamal Abdul Aziz: 7/225)
