Hadith 716

Narrated Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: "When a fly falls into the vessel of any one of you, he should immerse it, for indeed in one of its wings is disease and in the other is cure (healing)."

Explanation & Benefits

Benefits:
From the aforementioned hadith, it is understood that if a fly falls into water or any other liquid and dies, the water does not become impure. Therefore, such milk, tea, or water should not be discarded; if one’s disposition allows, one may drink it, and if one’s disposition does not accept it, then drinking it is not obligatory. The scholars have made an analogy (qiyas) from the fly to every such animal whose blood does not flow, and have stated that the same ruling applies to the honeybee, wasp, spider, etc.—that is, if any of these animals falls into water and dies, the water remains pure. The wisdom behind immersing the fly is established from the aforementioned hadith. Today’s science also acknowledges that one wing of the fly carries dangerous viruses, and these act immediately; when the fly falls into food or drink, the wing that contains the virus is deposited into the food, while its other wing contains anti-virus or counter-virus microbes. If the fly is immersed, the anti-virus microbes mix into the food and immediately eliminate those dangerous germs, thus becoming a means of nutritional health and well-being. Otherwise, this very food could become a source of infectious diseases and a cause of a person’s destruction.
