Hadith 715

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a man's thigh, so he said to him: "Cover your thigh, for the thigh of a man is part of his 'awrah (private parts)."

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits:
It is mentioned in Sahih Bukhari that Sayyiduna Anas radi Allahu anhu said: The Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam uncovered his thigh (during the Battle of Khaybar). Imam Bukhari rahimahullah states that the narration of Sayyiduna Anas radi Allahu anhu is more authentic in terms of its chain of transmission. (Bukhari, Book of Prayer, before hadith no. 371)

The first narration is a statement, the second is an action; where there appears to be a contradiction between a statement and an action, the statement will be given preference.

Allamah Shawkani rahimahullah said that including the thigh within the private parts (awrah) is correct and established by evidences, but the navel and the knee are not included in the awrah. Imam Nawawi rahimahullah stated: Most of the scholars are of the opinion that the thigh is included in the awrah.

The position of Imam Ahmad and Imam Malik is that only the front and back private parts (qubul and dubur) are included in the awrah; the thigh is not included in the awrah. This is also the view of the Zahiri scholars and Ibn Jarir and others. However, the truth is that the thigh is also included in the awrah. (Nayl al-Awtar: 2/62)

The preferred opinion appears to be that the thigh is included in the awrah. Therefore, during sports and similar activities, long shorts should be worn.
