Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said regarding the hem of women’s garments: “One span.” I said: Then their shins will become exposed. He (peace be upon him) said: “Then one hand (is sufficient).”

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits: From the aforementioned hadith, it is understood that women should keep their trousers (shalwar) below the ankles. Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah states: There are two conditions for men: the recommended (mustahabb) condition is that the lower garment (izaar) be raised up to the middle of the shin, and the permissible (ja'iz) condition is that it be up to the ankles (above them). There are also two conditions for women. The recommended (mustahabb) is that it be one handspan longer than the permissible condition for men, and the permissible (ja'iz) condition is one arm’s length, that is, two handspans longer than the permissible condition for men. (Fath al-Bari: 10/320)
However, it is unfortunate that in the present era, women keep their trousers above the ankles and men below. Whereas men are commanded to keep them above the ankles and women below; such people should be fearful. Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu narrates that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam cursed the woman who wears clothing like men and cursed the man who wears clothing like women. (Hakim: 4/194)
Imam Hakim rahimahullah said: This hadith is authentic according to the conditions of Muslim. However, if a woman lets her garment hang more than an arm’s length, then such women are also included in the warning that has come in the hadith.
