Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever drags his lower garment out of arrogance, Allah will not look at him (with mercy)."

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits:
From the aforementioned hadith, it is understood that wearing one's garment below the ankles is a sign of arrogance and pride, and doing so is forbidden (haram). Allah Dhul-Jalal will not look at such people with mercy and love, because nothing can be hidden from the sight of Allah Dhul-Jalal; however, the one who adopts humility becomes deserving of a merciful gaze. The arrogant and proud, on the other hand, become deserving of Allah Dhul-Jalal’s gaze of wrath, as is stated in the divine command: ﴿اِنَّ اللّٰهَ لَا یُحِبُّ مَنْ کَانَ مُخْتَالًا فَخُوْرَ﴾ (an-Nisa: 36) “Indeed, Allah does not love anyone who is arrogant and boastful.”

If one reflects upon the ahadith, it becomes clear that letting any garment hang out of pride, arrogance, or conceit is wrong and impermissible.

As is mentioned in the hadith, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Whoever lets any of his izar (lower garment), shirt, or turban hang out of arrogance, Allah will not look at him with mercy on the Day of Resurrection.” (Sahih al-Jami‘ as-Saghir, no. 2770)

Letting the shirt hang means opening its sleeves and letting them extend beyond the hands. Letting the turban hang refers to letting its ends hang to the right and left sides out of pride and arrogance. Now the question arises: to what length should the garment be kept? Sayyiduna Hudhayfah radi Allahu anhu narrates that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam held my shin or his own shin (the thick part) and said: “This is the place for the garment. If you do not accept this, then a little below it. If you do not accept even this, then the garment has no right to be at the ankles.” (Sahih Tirmidhi, no. 1457)

However, if someone says, “I do not let it hang out of arrogance, I just let it hang,” then this statement is not correct, because letting the garment hang below the ankles itself is arrogance. As is narrated in Sahih Bukhari from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah radi Allahu anhu, the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Whatever part of the garment is below the ankles is in the Fire.” Similarly, if a person lets his garment hang due to a bodily defect, this excuse will also not be accepted.

As Sayyiduna Shurayd radi Allahu anhu narrates: The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam saw a man who was dragging his garment. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam hurried towards him or ran to him and said: “Raise your garment and fear Allah.” He said: “My feet are crooked, my knees rub against each other.” The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Raise your garment, for everything Allah ‘Azza wa Jall has created is beautiful.” After that, whenever that man was seen, his garment would be at mid-shin. (Musnad Ahmad: 4/390. Silsilah as-Sahihah, no. 1441)

It is clear that this Companion was not letting his garment hang out of arrogance, yet the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam forbade him because there could be suspicion of arrogance in it.
