Narrated from Sayyida Umm Qais bint Mihsan (may Allah be pleased with her) that she brought her son to the service of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). I pressed his throat with my finger out of fear of a throat disease, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why do you press your children's throats with your finger like this? You should use this Indian wood (costus)." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took her son, and he urinated on the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called for water and poured it over it or sprinkled it on it. The narrator said: Thus, this method became established that if a child does not eat food, water will be sprinkled on his urine, and if he eats food, his urine will be washed.

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits: From the aforementioned hadith, it is understood that the treatment for a child’s throat pain is not to press with a finger, but rather to use Indian aloeswood (ʿūd hindī). Indian aloeswood is a remedy for many illnesses. In Sahih al-Bukhari, it is narrated that Sayyidah Umm Qais radi Allahu anha states: I heard the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam say: “You should use this Indian aloeswood, for it contains a cure for seven diseases. For throat pain, it is administered through the nose. For pain in the side, it is chewed.” (Bukhari, no. 5692)
