Hadith 671

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace be upon him) said: "Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, says to fever: You are My fire; I impose you upon My believing servant in the world so that it may become his share from the fire of Hell."

Explanation & Benefits

Benefits:
In the mentioned hadith, there is a great glad tidings for the believers that if a believer falls ill, then in return Allah Dhul-Jalal will save him from the fire of Hell. One should not ask Allah Dhul-Jalal for hardship, but if hardship comes, one should patiently endure it with cheerfulness. And one should also continue to supplicate for well-being (‘afiyah).

In another hadith, it is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu that a Bedouin came, and the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam asked him, “Have you ever had a fever?” He replied, “What is fever?” The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said, “It is a heat that develops between the skin and the flesh.” He said, “No, (I have never had such a thing).” The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam then asked, “Have you ever had a headache (suda‘)?” He replied, “What is a headache?” The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said, “It is a wind that enters the head and strikes the veins.” He said, “No, (that has never happened).” The narrator says that when that man stood up and left, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said, “Whoever wishes to see a person from among the people of Hell, let him look at this man.” (Adab al-Mufrad by al-Bukhari, no. 495) Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah has graded this hadith as hasan sahih.
