Hadith 659

Sayyida Umm Bani Karz Ka'bain (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say regarding 'Aqiqah: "For a boy, two equal (similar) goats, and for a girl, one goat (should be slaughtered)."

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits:
From the aforementioned hadith, it is understood that performing ‘aqiqah (the sacrifice for a newborn boy or girl) is Sunnah. This is because children are a great blessing from Allah, the Possessor of Majesty, and every blessing requires gratitude.

Shaykh ‘Uthaymeen rahimahullah says: “The ‘aqiqah for a child is a sacrifice by which one seeks nearness to Allah and expresses gratitude to Him for the blessing of offspring.” (Fatawa Islamiyyah: 2/324)

It is narrated in Sunan Ibn Majah: Sayyiduna Samurah radi Allahu anhu reports that the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Every boy is held in pledge for his ‘aqiqah; on the seventh day, an animal should be slaughtered on his behalf, his head should be shaved, and he should be named.” (Sunan Ibn Majah, Chapters on Sacrifices, no. 3165)

However, if one does not have the means, then this act of worship, i.e., the performance of ‘aqiqah, is waived, as Shaykh ‘Uthaymeen rahimahullah says: If a person is poor at the time of his child’s birth, then ‘aqiqah is not obligatory upon him, because he is incapable, and due to incapacity, acts of worship are waived. (Fatawa Islamiyyah: 2/326)

From the aforementioned ahadith, it is understood that both male and female animals are permissible. And for the animal of ‘aqiqah, the conditions required for the animal of sacrifice (udhiyah) are not necessary, as ‘Allamah ‘Abdur-Rahman Mubarakpuri rahimahullah says: It is not established from any authentic or weak hadith to impose (udhiyah-related) conditions. (Tuhfat al-Ahwadhi: 5/99)

In the hadith, the word (mukafataan) appears. Imam Abu Dawud rahimahullah says: I heard Imam Ahmad rahimahullah say that the meaning of (mukafataan) is: both goats should be equal or close to each other. (Sunan Abi Dawud, no. 2834)

Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah has presented various opinions in “Fath al-Bari”:
➊ Of the same age and kind.
➋ Equal in the act of slaughter (i.e., both should be slaughtered at the same time, not that one is slaughtered in the morning and the other at noon or evening).
➌ Equal to the sacrificial animal.

Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah has considered the second opinion to be preferable. (Fath al-Bari: 9/733)
