Benefits:
Some researchers have declared the aforementioned narration to be weak. Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah has graded the rest of the hadith as authentic except for the mention of "two years." It is understood from this that if a woman accepts Islam before her husband, then they cannot have marital relations. If, after one menstrual cycle (hayd), the woman wishes to marry another man, she may do so. (Bukhari, Book of Divorce, No: 5282)
However, if she wishes to wait for her first husband, that is also permissible. And when he accepts Islam, the marriage that existed during the time of disbelief will remain valid.
Allamah Ibn al-Qayyim rahimahullah states: In the ahadith, there is nowhere any mention of considering the waiting period (‘iddah), nor did the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam ever ask any woman whether her waiting period had ended or not. To our knowledge, there is not a single person who, due to accepting Islam, was required to renew the marriage contract. Rather, separation would occur, and the woman would marry another man, or the (first) marriage would remain intact. Whether the woman accepted Islam first or the man, as for the completion of separation and consideration of the waiting period, we do not know that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam ever made a decision based on either of these reasons, even though during the blessed era of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, many men and their wives accepted Islam.
