Hadith 649

Ata (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated: We participated with Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) in the funeral of the noble wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Maymunah, at the place of Saraf. He said: This is the noble wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so when you lift her body, do not shake it, do not jolt it, and be gentle. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had nine pure wives; he had assigned turns for eight of them, but had not assigned a turn for one. Ata (may Allah have mercy on him) said: We found out that the one for whom the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had not assigned a turn was Lady Safiyyah bint Huyayy ibn Akhtab (may Allah be pleased with her).

Benefits:
Umm al-Mu’minin Sayyidah Maymunah radi Allahu anha passed away in 51 AH. It is evident that the Companions radi Allahu anhum held the Mothers of the Believers radi Allahu anhunna in great respect. From the mentioned hadith, it is understood that if a man has more than one wife, he should assign turns among them. A man can have up to four wives at one time.

The Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam had nine wives at one time, and this was something specific to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. Just as charity is forbidden for the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and his family, while it is permissible for the rest of the Ummah.

The inheritance of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was not to be distributed, whereas the inheritance of the rest of the Ummah is distributable.

After the passing of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, it was not permissible for the Mothers of the Believers to marry any other man, whereas there is no such ruling for the wives of any other member of the Ummah.

The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam had a total of eleven wives:
(1) Sayyidah Khadijah bint Khuwaylid radi Allahu anha. At the time of marriage, her age was 40 years, and she passed away at the age of 65.
(2) Sayyidah Sawdah bint Zam’ah radi Allahu anha. At the time of marriage, her age was 50 years, and she passed away at the age of 72.
(3) Sayyidah Aishah radi Allahu anha. At the time of consummation, her age was 9 years. She passed away at the age of 66.
(4) Sayyidah Hafsah bint Umar radi Allahu anha. At the time of marriage, her age was 22 years.
(5) Sayyidah Zaynab bint Khuzaymah radi Allahu anha. At the time of marriage, her age was 30 years. She lived only 8 months after marriage.
(6) Sayyidah Umm Salamah radi Allahu anha. At the time of marriage, her age was 26 years. She passed away at the age of 84.
(7) Sayyidah Zaynab bint Jahsh radi Allahu anha. At the time of marriage, her age was 36 years, and she passed away at the age of 52.
(8) Sayyidah Juwayriyyah bint Harith radi Allahu anha. At the time of marriage, her age was 20 years. She passed away at the age of 65.
(9) Sayyidah Umm Habibah bint Abi Sufyan radi Allahu anha. She married the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam at the age of 36. She lived to the age of 73.
(10) Sayyidah Safiyyah bint Huyayy radi Allahu anha. At the time of marriage, her age was 17 years. She passed away at the age of 60.
(11) Sayyidah Maymunah bint Harith radi Allahu anha. She married the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam at the age of 36. She passed away at the age of 80.

Except for Sayyidah Aishah radi Allahu anha, the rest of the Mothers of the Believers were widows. Except for Sayyidah Khadijah al-Kubra radi Allahu anha and Sayyidah Zaynab bint Khuzaymah radi Allahu anha, turns were assigned among the remaining nine wives. This is because as long as Sayyidah Khadijah radi Allahu anha was alive, the Prophet did not marry another woman. As for Sayyidah Zaynab bint Khuzaymah radi Allahu anha, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam married her as his fifth wife in 4 AH at the age of 55, and she lived only 8 months after marriage.

In the aforementioned hadith, it is stated that the one whose turn was not assigned was Sayyidah Safiyyah radi Allahu anha. However, this is a mistake on the part of Ata (the narrator). In reality, it was Sayyidah Sawdah radi Allahu anha. As narrated from Sayyidah Aishah radi Allahu anha, Sayyidah Sawdah radi Allahu anha gifted her (turn) day to Aishah radi Allahu anha. And the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would divide both her own day and Sawdah radi Allahu anha’s day for Aishah. (Bukhari, no. 5212; Muslim, no. 1463)

Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah states: Sayyidah Sawdah radi Allahu anha, due to her old age, gifted her turn (to Aishah radi Allahu anha) out of fear of being divorced. (Fath al-Bari: 10/391)
