Encouragement to keep dowry simple
Hadith 648

اَخْبَرَنَا الْفَضْلُ بْنُ مُوْسٰی، عَنِ ابْنِ الْحَارِثِ۔ وَهُوَ جَابِرٌ۔ عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، عَنْ رَّسُوْلِ اللّٰهِ صَلَّی اللّٰهُ عَلَیْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: (خَیْرُ کُنَّ اَیْسَرُکُنَّ) صِدَاقًا۔ قَالَ: فَکَانَ مُجَاهِدٌ یَقُوْلُ: اِنْ کَانَ دِرْهَمًا فَهُوَ حَلَالٌ۔.
Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace be upon him) said: "The best among your women is the one whose dowry is the easiest among you." Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) used to say: Even if it is one dirham, it is lawful.

In a sahih (authentic) hadith, it is narrated from Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir radi Allahu anhu that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
«خَيْرُ الصِّدَاقِ اَيْسَرُهٗ.» [سنن ابي داود، رقم: 2117۔ حاكم: 2؍ 181۔ صحيح الجامع الصغير، رقم: 3279]
"The best dowry (mahr) is that whose payment is easiest."
Thus, the best mahr is that which is easy for the husband to pay; that is, it is better to set a small mahr. Sayyiduna Umar radi Allahu anhu said: Do not make the dowries of women very expensive, for if this were a means of honor in this world and of piety in the sight of Allah, then the Prophet of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would have been most deserving of it among you all.
