Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits: In the aforementioned hadith, the expiation (kaffarah) for zihar is to feed sixty needy people; this is in the case when one is unable to free a slave or observe two consecutive months of fasting. As is stated in the Noble Qur’an:
“Those among you who make zihar to their wives (i.e., declare them unlawful to themselves by saying, ‘You are to me like my mother’s back’), they are not their mothers. Their mothers are none but those who gave birth to them. Indeed, they utter an ill word and a falsehood. And indeed, Allah is Pardoning, Forgiving. And those who make zihar to their wives, then wish to go back on what they said, then (the expiation) is to free a slave before they touch one another. That is what you are admonished with, and Allah is All-Aware of what you do. But whoever does not find (a slave), then fasting two consecutive months before they touch one another. And whoever is not able, then feeding sixty needy people. That is so you may believe in Allah and His Messenger. And these are the limits set by Allah; and for the disbelievers is a painful punishment.”
