Hadith 621

Lady Umm Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: We were commanded not to wear colored clothes during mourning for a husband, except for a garment that was partly white and partly colored.

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits:
From the mentioned hadith, it is understood that mourning over the deceased is not permitted for more than three days. The female Companions (radi Allahu anhunna) acted upon these ahadith and presented an example before the people. As is found in Sahih al-Bukhari: When the news of the death of Sayyiduna Abu Sufyan (radi Allahu anhu) reached Umm al-Mu’minin Sayyidah Umm Habibah (radi Allahu anha), on the third day, she called for saffron (fragrance), applied it to her cheeks and arms, and said: “If I had not heard from the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) that ‘It is not permissible for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to mourn for anyone more than three days except for her husband, for whom she should mourn for four months and ten days,’ then I would not have felt the need to use this fragrance at this time.” (Bukhari, Kitab al-Jana’iz, no. 1280)

From this hadith, it is also understood that if a woman's husband passes away, her mourning period (‘iddah) is four months and ten days. However, if the woman is pregnant, then her ‘iddah is until the delivery of the child. From the above hadith, it is also understood that during the period of mourning, a woman should not apply kohl (surma), and likewise, anything that expresses adornment is prohibited, such as applying henna or wearing jewelry, etc.
