Hadith 62

With this same chain, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "When Allah created the creation, He wrote a writing and placed it with Himself above the Throne. In it was written: My mercy prevails over My wrath."

In the aforementioned hadith, the mercy of Allah Dhul-Jalal is mentioned: when, in any matter, one aspect calls for mercy and the other for wrath, then the dealing of Allah Dhul-Jalal’s mercy prevails over the aspect of wrath.

Allamah Tayyibi rahimahullah says: In the predominance of mercy, there is an indication that those deserving of mercy will also, in terms of number, prevail over those deserving of wrath. Mercy will be bestowed even upon those from whom no good deeds have been issued. In contrast, wrath will only be upon those from whom sins have been proven. (Fath al-Bari: 6/292. Umdat al-Qari: 12/258)

The extent of Allah Dhul-Jalal’s mercy can also be gauged from this statement of the Messenger: It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah radi Allahu anhu that the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Allah has one hundred mercies, of which He has distributed one mercy among all creation. Because of this (mercy), they show mercy to one another, and because of it, they show kindness to one another. Because of it, even wild animals show affection to their young. He has kept ninety-nine mercies with Himself, with which He will show mercy to His servants on the Day of Resurrection.” (Muslim, Kitab al-Tawbah, no: 2752)

The statement of Allah the Exalted is: ﴿وَ رَحْمَتِیْ وَسِعَتْ کُلَّ شَیْئٍ فَسَاَکْتُبُهَا لِلَّذِیْنَ یَتَّقُوْنَ وَ یُؤْتُوْنَ الزَّکٰوةَ وَ الَّذِیْنَ هُمْ بِاٰیٰتِنَا یُؤْمِنُوْنَ﴾ (al-A‘raf: 156)
“My mercy has encompassed all things, and I shall decree it for those who have taqwa (God-consciousness), give zakat (alms), and those who believe in Our signs.”
