Lady Asma bint Yazid (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by us while we were sitting among women. He greeted us with peace, then said: “Beware of «منعمين» (those who do good, husbands) and do not be ungrateful to them.” We asked: O Messenger of Allah! What is meant by being ungrateful to «منعمين»? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “It may be that one of you is with her parents before marriage, then Allah grants her a husband and blesses her with wealth and children through him, but then (the woman), in anger, says: I have never seen any good from you.”

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits: From the mentioned hadith, it is understood that a man may greet non-mahram women with salam. Imam Abu Dawud rahimahullah has established a chapter in his Sunan titled ((Chapter on Greeting Women)). It is also understood that women may be addressed separately for admonition and advice. An elder once told me: I greeted an old woman with salam, and she responded by insulting me. Where there is fear of temptation (fitnah), one should avoid it. However, if there are many women present, or they are mostly elderly, and there is no fear of temptation, then it is permissible to greet with salam.
