Hadith 599

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade that a woman be married to a man who already has her paternal aunt in his wedlock, and (likewise) that a paternal aunt be married to a man who already has her niece in his wedlock.

Explanation & Benefits

Benefits:
From the aforementioned hadith, it is understood that it is prohibited (haram) to combine the mentioned relations in the marriage of one man. The majority of scholars hold this view. However, this prohibition is temporary, not permanent; there is no harm in marrying at different times after divorce or death. This hadith also refutes the Khawarij and the Shia, whose position is that these relations can be combined. (Sharh Muslim by al-Nawawi: 5/309)
