Hadith 594

Amr bin Maymun bin Mehran narrated from his father: He said: Umm Kulthum bint Uqbah was married to Zubair bin Al-Awwam (may Allah be pleased with him). He went out for prayer, and she began experiencing labor pains and concealed it. She said: “Make my heart happy by giving me one divorce.” So he gave her one divorce. When he returned (after praying), she had given birth to the child. So he went to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and asked him about the matter. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “According to Allah’s law, the prescribed period has been completed; send her a marriage proposal.” He said: “She deceived me, may Allah deceive her.”

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits:
The command of Allah, the Exalted, is: ﴿وَاُوْلَاتُ الْاَحْمَالِ اَجَلُهُنَّ اَنْ یَّضَعْنَ حَمْلَهُنَّ﴾ () .... "The waiting period (‘iddah) of pregnant women is until they deliver their burden (i.e., give birth)."
The waiting period (‘iddah) of a divorced woman is three menstrual cycles. The command of Allah, the Exalted, is: ﴿وَ الْمُطَلَّقٰتُ یَتَرَبَّصْنَ بِاَنْفُسِهِنَّ ثَلٰثَةَ قُرُوْٓءٍ﴾ () .... "Divorced women shall keep themselves in waiting for three menstrual cycles."
Sayyiduna Zubair radi Allahu anhu had given a revocable divorce (talaq raj‘i), because the first and second divorces are revocable. After the third, the right (of return) is terminated. The waiting period (‘iddah) for a revocable divorce (talaq raj‘i) is either delivery of the burden (childbirth) or three menstrual cycles. If the husband returns (to her) before these are completed, it is valid. If he returns after, then a new marriage contract (nikah) will be required, and that too will only occur if the woman consents; otherwise, it will not occur. Similarly, upon childbirth, the waiting period (‘iddah) due to the husband's death also ends.
