Hadith 592

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace be upon him) said: "When any one of you calls his wife to bed and she refuses, and he spends the night angry with her, then the angels continue to curse her until morning."

Explanation & Benefits

Benefits:
From the aforementioned hadith, it is understood that it is obligatory for a woman to obey her husband. Severing ties from the bed means not sleeping with him at night or refusing when he calls her for intimacy. However, if there is a valid Shar‘i (Islamic legal) excuse, then refusal is permissible, and the husband should also be mindful of this matter. Imam Nawawi rahimahullah states: A woman being in the state of menstruation (hayd) is not a Shar‘i excuse for refusal, because in such a state, the man has the right to intimacy over the clothing. (Sharh al-Nawawi: 10/7,8) But if there is no Shar‘i excuse, then in the case of refusal, she becomes deserving of Allah’s wrath and such women are also deserving of the curse of the angels.

In another narration, it is mentioned that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “The prayer of two types of people does not rise above their heads: a runaway slave until he returns to his masters, and a woman who disobeys her husband until she returns (to him).” (Majma‘ al-Zawa’id: 4/313)
